"I have a question about vaginal strictures.

Is this a genetic issue? Would you include a bitch with a vaginal stricture in your breeding program? Would you include any puppies out of a bitch with a vaginal stricture in your breeding program?

Would you breed a bitch with a vaginal stricture to a dog whose dam had a vaginal stricture?

What about breeding a dog and bitch with each of their dams having had vaginal strictures?

Any thoughts would be appreciated."

I feel that in most cases, it is a genetic issue. I personally know of several generations of Siberian Husky bitches from the same line that have a very high incidence of vaginal strictures. After AI'ing two generations, the breeder finally stopped breeding from that line and went to bitches that could breed naturally.

I most likely would not breed a bitch with a stricture, period.... and especially not to a line known to have strictures also. That is just asking for trouble. I figure that nature knows much better than I do which dogs should reproduce. A stricture would cause the dog to not be able to breed in the wild, and/or cause whelping problems, none of which I want in my program. I wouldn't consider it worth it to chance that sort of thing. I consider strictures to be a health issue and not one that I would want to deal with in a breeding dog.

Definitely not. Again, that is just asking for trouble, and taking a chance of putting health problems into my lines is really not worth it, no matter how "nice" the dogs may be otherwise. Like I said before, I consider it a genetic health problem, as well as a potentially life-threatening one if the bitch were to experience whelping problems and stuff. The way I see it, there are plenty of nice, healthy dogs in every breed that those with health or fertility problems do not need to have their genes carried on.

Recently I found out that one of my girls has a vaginal stricture. My vet consulted the top veterinary GU Specialist in the USA who said it's genetic. I chose not to breed her. I was given the option of having a surgical dilation procedure, AI with a scheduled c-section, or not breeding her. Because I was told that it's genetic I will not breed her. Even if it wasn't genetic...I wouldn't breed her as she'd have to have a scheduled c-section since she cannot whelp naturally. I would not risk her life by doing a scheduled unnecessary surgery. Her life is more important to me than having a litter out of her. That's my opinion.

I would 100% NEVER breed from a bitch who had a vaginal stricture, and would also never breed from a bitch whose Dam or Great-Dam had vaginal strictures.

The whole purpose of breeding is to better the previous generation. So why would you want to breed from an animal that clearly has a reproductive issue? You'd only be 'going backwards' and would be likely to create more dogs with reproductive issues in the future.

This is not something I would breed either. Health is paramount. A dog can be beautiful and conformationally correct, but that all comes to nothing if she is going to lose her life whelping or pass off extraordinary whelping difficulties to her get. There will always be another bitch of good quality, and the good quality of the bitch with the stricture is essentially an illusion--what she would bring to your program is potentially worse than other issues that have caused you to pass on other dogs or bitches before, it's just harder to "see."
