How many people actually use the retirement couch? What is your criteria for who gets put there vs. simply FHed?

I use it for my Merit award winners...some others use it for their top show dogs, but I don't. However, the Merit winners are few and very special (I've bred three so far, in breeds where there hadn't been any previous ones since 2007-2008), so I choose to keep those.

Just the special dogs... Had GCH CH Degree Lucky Strike there in my basic until she died. #1 English Setterby GCh points (239), #40 all time ES, 2 group wins (which was not happening at the time or now).... Could not fh, felt like a crime. One special"dog"

Eta she would be silver grand in akc, that would be a cool addition... And another reason I held on lol
Also typing at 4am, bad idea

I keep my dogs that win BIS or many group placements. I have not had a merit dog yet.

My 3 current couch dogs are:

A 19 BIG winner
A 2 BIS, 10 BIG winner
and A 10 BIG winner

The BIS winner almost being a merit dog and having produced the top sop for the time that introduced a 10 HD.

I should say, if one of my dogs won a BIS, I would definitely not FH him/her! Lol my merit winners have been in breeds that don't win BIS yet (a Dachshund bitch, a Bull Terrier stud, and a Keeshond stud), so that is why I justify to keep them over my good show dogs happy :)

Maybe I have a hard time letting go... but I keep just about all of my Grand Champions! LOL

Occasionally, if I need to cut back on expenses, I'll go through and FH some of the dogs that had less noteworthy show careers or offspring lists.
