I notice many people do not know how to calculate what a specific dog's SOP would be with 20 Show Shine (or a different value for any specific trait) so that's what I'll explain for you here.

To begin, I'll give you a specific example.

www.showdog.com/dog.aspx?id=13335954

Take a look at the above bitch. Her Show Shine (referred to as 'SS' from this point on) is exactly 18. Now, to calculate what exactly her SOP would be with 20SS, we're going to use a simple three-step equation.

Step 1. Perfect SS (always 20) - actual SS = X
Step 2. X (from above) / 2 = Y
Step 3. actual SOP + Y = theoretical SOP with 20 SS

This might look complex, but if you look at the dog above, you'll see that:

20 SS - 18 SS (this specific dog's SS) = 2
2 (from above) / 2 = 1
95.60 (the specific dog's SOP) + 1 = 96.60 (this dog's SOP with 20 SS)

That's it! If my equation was difficult to understand, here is an explanation only in words:

Perfect SS - actual SS = a number
Divide the number by 2, and add that quotient to your dog's SOP.

If anyone would like me to explain how to do this for specific traits as well, please let me know with a reply to this post!

I just go... for every 1 point off 20, add 0.5 to the SOP, and for every tenth off 20, add 0.05 to the SOP.

Examples:

19.4 SS, SOP 93.5
-> 0.6 (six tenths) off 20. So 6 x 0.05 = 0.3
-> SOP with 20 SS would be 93.8 (93.5 + 0.3)

17.0 SS, SOP 80.0
-> 3.0 (3 points) off 20. So 3 x 0.5 = 1.5
-> SOP with 20 SS would be 81.5 (80.0 + 1.5)

19.7 SS, SOP 99.5
-> 0.3 (3 tenths) off 20. So 3 x 0.05 = 0.15
-> SOP with 20 SS would be 99.65 (99.5 + 0.15)

Now to combine...

18.4 SS, SOP 90.4
-> 0.6 (6 tenths) off 20. So 6 x 0.05 = 0.3
-> 1 point off 20. So 1 x 0.5 = 0.5
-> Add these two to equal 0.8
-> SOP 90.4 + 0.8 = 91.2 with 20 SS

Every full point is 19 SS, 18 SS, 17 SS, etc.

Every tenth is 19.9, 19.8, 19.7, etc.

So 18.6 SS would be 1.4 points off 20 SS.
-> 1 x 0.5 = 0.5 + 4 x 0.05 which equals 0.2 = 0.7
-> Add current SOP to 0.7 and there you go.

I have a little cheat sheet. But some are easy.

If SS is 19, you add 0.5 points to the SOP.
If SS is 18, you add 1 point to the SOP.
If SS is 17 you add 1.5 to the SOP.
If SS is 16 you add 2 points and so on.

It's the odd ones that are hard, like SS of 17.3 or 16.7.

Here's my spreadsheet:

19.8 add 0.1
19.6 add 0.2
19.4 add 0.3
19.2 add 0.4
19.0 add 0.5
18.8 add 0.6
18.6 add 0.7
18.4 add 0.8
18.2 add 0.9
18.0 add 1.0
17.8 add 1.1
17.6 add 1.2
17.4 add 1.3
17.2 add 1.4
17.0 add 1.5
16.8 add 1.6
16.6 add 1.7
16.4 add 1.8
16.2 add 1.9
16.0 add 2.0
15.8 add 2.1
15.6 add 2.2
15.4 add 2.3
15.2 add 2.4
15.0 add 2.5
14.8 add 2.6
14.6 add 2.7
14.4 add 2.8
14.2 add 2.9
14.0 add 3.0

ad infinitum

Did you know?
A specialty show may be regional or national. A "Best in Show" win at a national specialty show is tremendously prestigious, indicating that the winning dog or bitch triumphed at a contest which attracted entries from the most serious fanciers of that breed in the country or continent. Some specialty shows attract international entries.
