Me again! Any one interested in talking about trait breeding they are doing? Since I was lucky enough to get 10s in head and fore, I'm trying to solidify a line with those 10's locked in.

I was also lucky enough to get a puppy with a 10 temp today-unfortunately had lowish SS but decent SOP overall.

Other than that, just working on raising traits overall. Would be interested to see what our highest number is for each trait. Will go through my kennel later and see what I've got if anyone cares! wink :)

Here are the best stats in my kennel:
Head: 10.0 (2)
FQ: 10.2 (1)
HQ: 9.4 (1)
Gait: 10.5 (2)
TNB: 9.9 (1)
Coat: 10.7 (1)
Size: 9.0 (3)
TMP: 10.3 (1), 9.7 (1)
Feet: 9.2 (1)

As a general rule I don't keep any puppy with any trait under 8.0 or over 12.0. When I did trait breeding before, I brought in a few source dogs to add diversity to the line and got great results each time after about 6 months of breeding those starters to show quality dogs at the time. Honestly looking at my tallies here, I might try to get something like that going again.

I too generally breed for an overall balanced dog, but will keep a dog with a lower 5% trait if the overall dog is nice-but then breed back to the highest I have in that trait!

Here's what my highest are-I didn't count numbers of each.

Head-10
Fore-10
Hind-9.4
Gait 9.5/10.5
TNB-9.5
Coat-11
S-8.9
Temp-10
Feet-9.2

So long as I didn't miss something, here are the best stats I have. I tend to breed for overall traits, but will try to match the lowest traits in my bitch to a dog with the highest traits. But, in this breed, sometimes it ends up being "the only one with a COI that's low enough" that gets chosen!

Head: 10.0
FQ: 9.8, 10.2
HQ: 9.5
Gait: 9.5
TNB: 9.5
Coat: 11.2
Size: 8.8
TMP: 9.9
Feet: 9.3

Had an interesting girl today, looks like I'm going to break the nothing over 12 rule in favor of seeing if she passes on these darker blues... www.showdog.com/dog.aspx?id=14084743

happy :)

Just curious. How come we get rid of dogs with stats over 12?

I thought 12 was a good thing, but I have a lot to learn. happy :)

12/8 isn't necessarily a bad thing, depending on the breed and taking into account the dog's other stats, but in Canaans we've just bred them so consistent that there's rarely a reason to keep those dogs--usually you can FH them in favor of dogs that have darker blues.

happy :)

It depends on your goals! If I am just breeding for specific traits, I don't worry about numbers below 8 or above 12 if they are in a trait that is rated lowest for the breed. If I'm trying to raise overall SOP for showing, right now in Canaans you can mostly stay closer to 10.

Figured my list on here could use an update

Head--10.0 (1)
Fore--10.2/9.8 (11)
Hind--9.4 (1)
Gait--10.5 (11)
TNB--10.2 (1)
Coat--10.3 (1)
Size--10.7 (1)
Temp--10.0 (1)
Feet--9.4 (1)

I've noticed better stats in feet popping up all over the place recently, hopefully that remains a trend! Also don't get too excited about the 10.3 coat--it's this guy www.showdog.com/dog.aspx?id=14175904 razz :p

Edited because I forgot temperament, which has also been improving very quickly!

happy :)

Had to update with this 9.9 TNB puppy out of Macsim...might be a fluke but I'll take it!
