When you buy a dog from someone who is using a custom ration, how does the feeding work for that? Do you pay for the ration the other person created?

Yep - fairly sure you end up paying for the ration used by the previous owner.

I always change the ration to one of my own after i buy a dog from someone else.

Yes, you pay to feed your own dogs.

You pay for whatever ration the dog is on until you change it to another; be it an adult, puppy, or custom ration.

the dogs stay on whatever ratio they were on at the time of purchase - if it's a user's custom ration they still get that.
When I buy show dogs for my basic kennel, I always ask for them to put the dogs on a 1777 for me since I can't in my basic.

If basics buy a dog from a premium and it's on a custom ration, ie puppy 1777, it will stay on that ration and you will pay whatever the premium kennel was paying ie $5.92.

Note - that's $5.95 / "bag", not 5.95 per feeding.

The stated costs are somewhat misleading.

My cockers:

* Food Adult:
** PetHouse-A $1.00 /day
** Adult 1777 $1.97 /day

* Food Pup:
** Pup 1171 $0.96 /day

That is what it costs me to feed cockers although I'm not sure how much it is for other breeds or if it's the same regardless of size - to level the playing field vs realistic costs to feed a Chihuahua as opposed to a Great Dane.

I have setters too but I've not done any cost analysis for them.

I always thought the $ prices for food were what you paid per day per dog

ie if the cost is listed as $5.92 you pay $5.92 a day, so 20 dogs at $1.67 costs you $33.40 a day

(what is a 'bag' of dog food?)

If you look at your food bill, and add up the prices for how many dogs are on the different rations, you'll see it doesn't add up to what the list price is.

If you have a basic, it's easiest to have one dog in the kennel and you can see how much you are charged for each ration. happy :)

Nope.

This kennel has 36 adult dogs
All on PetHouse for Adults.
Daily food bill is $36.00
Food cost $1.00 per dog per day
Food is $1.67/"bag".

I'm not sure where the 1.67 comes from actually. My cockers apparently eat 2/3 of a bag per day (lol). I wonder if that $1.67 is the max - what a Great Dane, Mastiff, etc would eat. That's based on the figures below for an English Setter - more than a cocker but less than a whole "bag". Chihuahuas would be less than cockers I expect.

It's easy to figure if all your dogs are on the same food. Put everyone on the same stuff for a day.

Puppy 1171 costs $0.96 per dog/day ($2.90/bag)
Adult 1777 costs $1.97 per dog/day ($5.92/bag)

These two I figured out some time ago and saved it in my kennel notes.

Now what I don't know for sure is whether different breeds cost the same - these are for cockers. Would a Great Dane be the same?

Answered that question.

This kennel has 34 adult English Setters on PetHouse Adult
Food bill is $37.76 per day
$1.11 per dog per day.

Larger breed, larger bill.

Now, if you wanted to try putting everyone on the same ration I'm not sure how that would work for mixed breeds and ages (puppies and adults).

The above tells me that it won't work for mixed size breeds although I know my American and English cockers all eat the same. Will a puppy on adult eat the same amount as an adult on adult? Don't know.

I personally only use 1777 for pups I'm sessioning from birth for the ring, 1171 is for girls I'm keeping for breeding Boy pups that will grow to be studs only, get pet house for puppies since their condition doesn't matter.

1777 either pup or adult ration is 5.92 where as 1171 is only 2.90.

I'm in my basic right now but i also have a family account happy :)

After being on (and off) here for over 10 years I've learnt something new from this thread - never ever thought to check exactly how much each dog cost to feed each day, just assumed (wrongly)the listed price was per dog per day -it makes perfect sense that it costs less to feed a Chihuahua than a Great Pyrenees

Did you know?
The two largest American dog shows after Westminster are the National Dog Show (which is televised on Thanksgiving Day by NBC, usually after the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade) and the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship.
