Best of Winners: choosing whether the Winners Dog or Winners Bitch is the best.

Best of Breed: best in the breed among all dogs in the classes.

Topaz is correct but to elaborate a bit:

There are a number of different classes divided by sex and the entrants are referred to as the "class" dogs. There is also a "Specials Only" which is not divided by sex.

The first place dogs in each class are compared to the other first placers of their sex and a Winners Dog and a Winners Bitch are chosen, along with a reserve in each sex. The Winners dog and bitch gain championship points and go on to compete for Best of Breed.

The Winners Dog and Bitch compete with all those entered as Specials and from this group a Best of Breed is chosen and a Best of Opposit - these are the best female and male of their breed in competition.

Best of Winners might also be picked Best of Breed if the judge feels it is a better dog than any of the Specials or in the case where there were no Specials entered. At the same time one or the other of the Winners Dog/Bitch are selected as Best of Winners.

Specials are dogs which have already won their championships. They might be working toward one of the Grand titles or some other recognition (Top Ten in the Breed).

Okay- so technically best of breed would be the "higher honor" ? As they are beating all winners and all specials?

Yes. Best of breed is the best dog of that breed in competition. Best of Winners is the best "class" dog of that breed in competition.

(That anonymous Bsaic above was me too.)

Did you know?
In the American Kennel Club, a dog needs 15 points to become a Champion, with each win gaining anywhere from zero to five points depending on the number of dogs competing and the area where the show is held.
