If I don't change this, what is the default? Is it the same number of sessions you get as basic?

Yes I think so

Yes, I too believe you need to change it when you upgrade from a Basic.

Most folks I believe go for all sessions finding it a better value when you sell unused sessions - usually at $5 each.
