How do you finish a dog?
When you show your dogs and go Winners Dog or Winners Bitch, most of the time you will receive points. You need to earn at least 15 points before your dog/bitch can finish their championship.
There is also a requirement that you go Winners Dog or Winners Bitch in at least two shows with at least three points (majors).

When are you going to make a pig, sheep, cat, guinea pig, horse, or rabbit sim?
We currently have plans for a pig and bucking bull simulation. We do not have timeframes as to when they will be completed.
Why don't I get paid for the puppies I send to forever homes?
Nobody is stopping you from selling your dogs to other users on the site. If a dog is a good breed example, you can sell it to another user looking for a show dog. That being said, we aren't going to add an uncontrolled/unlimited source of money into this sim.
It's an economics issue that can tear apart simulations like this. For an example, visit the SimulatedSports horse sim or www.simsteer.com cattle sim. Inflation gets out of control very easily and there isn't much that can be done about it that wouldn’t completely infuriate the users. Here’s what will happen if we allow people to send puppies to forever homes for money…
- User A decides he needs more money.
- User A doesn’t have dogs that anybody on the site wants
- User A decides to send puppies to forever home for money
- User A realizes he can do this over and over and over and make more and more and more money
- User A becomes Puppy Mill A
- User B sees what User A did and does the same thing
- User C sees what User A and User B did and does the same thing….
- ShowDog.Com becomes PuppyMillSim.Com
As mentioned earlier, if you require that users have quality dogs to send to the forever homes, User A would get to step two in the above scenario and realize there are other users on the site who are willing to buy his/her dogs.
The reason puppy mills exist is they are able to generate revenue. The only thing stopping them from taking over is ethics and you just can’t expect every person who comes along to ShowDog to be ethical enough to not create a puppy mill. We have added a source of revenue in the form of daily salaries to maintain the balances of our active users. Every dollar that is taken out of the sim is put back in.
Why hasn't my bitch given birth yet? Her due date is today.
This is the #1 question we get and in 99% of the cases it is just a matter of eager users jumping the gun.
On ShowDog.Com, bitches give birth throughout the day based on the time they were bred. If a bitch was bred at 2:00 PM, she will give birth at within approximately one hour of 122 hours after that time. We realize that the anticipation of a new litter can sometimes be overwhelming. Due to the large amount of e-mails we get from people who mistakenly think that they bred dogs earlier in the day than they did, please wait until a bitch is at least one day over due before sending a help request.
Do I have to subscribe to play this game?
No, you don't have to but if you want to have more than five dogs, the ability to breed your bitches, the ability to place your dogs up for stud, or some other features that enhance the sim, we do charge a small monthly fee.
Why don't you give us more sessions? I have too many dogs to take care of with this many sessons.
There are numerous reasons you are limited in the amount of time you have to work with your dogs each day. If you have too many dogs to work with, you don't need more sessions, you need to limit the size of your kennel. There is a limit to the amount of dogs you can reasonably manage which adds another element of strategy to the sim. If you are a subscriber, you have the option of receiving more sessions in exchange for a lower salary.

The daily salary is based on how much money needs to be put into the sim to increase the average balance of all users to $2,500. In the event that users don't spend as much as they normally do, the daily salary will be lowered because less money is needed to increased the average balance to $2,500.

By default, the top show dogs only shows stats for the current month. If you would like to see a ranking of your dog in the all-time standings, click on All Time Dog Rankings in the Top Dogs page to view the rankings.
How many shows can my dog enter each day?
Dogs are allowed to enter one all breed show and one specialty show per day.

You can enter your dog in as many shows as you want but any duplicate entries in the same show or excess entries in the same day will get deleted by the system within one to two hours.

Nothing, dogs have to win 15 points and at least two majors (shows in which they earn at least 3 points) before they finish their championship.

Any time a daily salary is missed, it is automatically rolled into the next day.
If you have changed your salary setting to no salary you will not get a salary at all.
Why didn't the so-and-so show run?
If a show doesn't get at least 10 entries, it is cancelled. In the event of a show cancellation, there are no entry fees paid but the sponsor of the show still has to pay the fee for hosting the show.
Why are there pop ups on this site? Why does my anti-virus software report problems?
We don't have any pop ups on this site and the only advertisers we use any longer are Amazon and Google. They don't do that kind of thing. Advertising isn't a big source of revenue for us and we don't have any reason to put parasite ware/pop ups, it drives off subscribers.
If you see a specific page that you think is trying to download spyware onto your computer, let me know the URL and I'll look into it. However; we have never done pop ups on Showdog.com.

The Enter in Shows button takes you to a page with just boxes to enter your dogs. The Enter in Shows Detailed takes you to a page where the shows your dog is entered in are marked with a “Withdraw” link instead of an enter box.
This feature is only available for subscribing users.
How do I breed?
To breed a bitch that you own that is over 30-days old, simply click the "Breed" button on her main dog info page while you are logged in. The first page you see will show you all of the dogs of the same breed in your kennel. If you want to breed to an outside stud, click on "For a list of stud dogs, please CLICK HERE" at the top of that page. You will be taken to a selection of the different studs in that breed you can use to breed your female. You can use an outside stud by clicking on the "Breed to this Stud" link on the dog's page. Bitches must wait five days after their last litter before they can be bred again.
A bitch must be 30 days old to breed to a stud that you own, but must be 31 days to breed to an outside stud. Dogs must be named before you can breed them.
Remember, free accounts can only breed one bitch. Once you have used up your first breeding, you will not be able to breed any more bitches.
How do I enter shows?
To enter your dog in shows, all you have to do is click on the Enter In Shows button that will appear on the information page for any dogs you own and have already named. You can also enter from the Dog Show Results page by clicking on the Enter link next to the name of the show.
If your dog is over 120 days old, you won't be able to enter it in conformation shows, only obedience shows. We automatically retire dogs from showing after four months to allow new dogs a chance to win.
If a show doesn't get at least ten entries it will be cancelled. In the event of a show cancellation, all entries will be withdrawn, you will not get charged for the entries, and your dogs will not have their condition impacted.
You are not able to enter your dog in invitational shows. They will be entered automatically if they qualify.
What is COI?
Technically, the COI is the probability that both genes of a pair in a dog are identical. Simply put, it's a measurement of inbreeding.
It is calculated by a mathematical formula that is somewhat complicated to many users. The function is...
COI = sum[ (.5 ^ (a + b + 1)) * (1 + c) ]
a = Generations between sire and common ancestor
b = Generations between dam and common ancestor
c = COI of common ancestor
If a common ancestor does not show up on both the top and bottom sides of a pedigree, it will not impact the COI of the dog. Using this principle, you may breed a highly inbred bitch to a highly inbred dog and end up with hybrid offspring that do not have any inbreeding whatsoever.
If you don't understand that formula, don't worry, it's not necessary to know how to calculate it. The COI for all dogs will be in the dog info pages and displayed on hypothetical breedings before they are confirmed.

Do standard accounts have higher quality accounts than basics?
No, starter dogs are the same. However, standard accounts are able to breed and improve the quality of their dogs through selective breeding.
How do I delete my account?
You cannot delete your account. If you do not login for two-weeks your account will go inactive. If you do not want your information stored, please send us an e-mail at admin@showdog.com.
What is the ideal COI?
The ideal COI for your dogs is anything under 15%. Above this level of inbreeding, an impact on the quality of the dog is felt heavily and increases exponentially as the inbreeding increases. COIs under 15% have no negative impact on dogs.

How do I buy a dog?
First, click "Dogs for Sale", then select a breed. From there you will be given a list of dogs for sale in that breed. Click the name of one of the dogs and there will be a link called "Offer to Buy this Dog".
Decide how much you would like the offer and submit it. The owner will have up to 48-hours to respond.
How many generations back does inbreeding go?
Currently, it goes back four-generations but there is a chance that may be increased in the future. Four generations back is the generation in which there are 16-ancestors.
How do you cancel a subscription?
It is up to the user to cancel his or her account through the Paypal website. Subscriptions cannot be canceled by phone or by e-mail, they MUST be cancelled on the Paypal website.
Once you cancel your subscription, you will continue to have access to premium areas until the term of your subscription has expired. At the end of the subscription term, your login account will be terminated and you will NOT be billed for a new subscription.

There is a dog in a forever home or abandoned kennel that I want. What do I have to do in order to buy it?
Unfortunately, you can't buy dogs from forever homes. If a dog has been sent to a forever home, it was sent there for a reason. If the original owner had wished to sell the dog, they would have. You also can't buy dogs from abandoned kennels. There is always a chance the original owner of the kennel will decide to come back to the site and it would be unfair to sell their dogs without their consent. In addition, selling dogs from abandoned kennels and the 'loving family' would lessen the value of dogs bred by our active kennels.
People retire from real life dog showing and from Showdog all the time. It is much more productive to focus on the dogs that are still active in the game.
Why does my breed take longer to groom/train?
The breed ratings on Showdog.com are based on the ratings for each breed in the Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds. While it might not be the best source, it is an unbiased source that doesn’t rate one breed higher/lower for a trait just because they want their dogs to finish higher in group competitions.
Each breed is different in real life and each breed is different on Showdog.com. These positives and negatives are something that should be considered when choosing a breed on this site.
The aspect of the simulation has been place since the very beginning (June 2003) and will not be removed. If you know of a concrete PUBLISHED reason that a certain breed should have its rating for a certain trait changed, please let us know. However, anecdotal stories such as, “I breed these dogs in real life and my dogs are easy to train”, or desires to make the breed easier such as, “we have trouble placing in group” will not be considered.
What is the SOP?
The SOP is a shorthand method of calculating a dog's quality. It is not endorsed or suggested for use by Showdog.com.
How do I get rid of dogs?
If you have dogs that you do not want or too many dogs for a basic account, you can either sell them or forever home them. Selling dogs takes time and there is no guarantee that somebody will buy them. If you can’t sell your dogs in time and you are over the basic account limit, you need to forever home them. To do that, click the link on their main dog info page.
Why can't I breed my bitch? She's already old enough to breed, she even had a litter a few days ago.
Bitches can't breed back for as much as five or six days on ShowDog.Com. As soon as your bitch is able to breed again, the button to do so will show up.
When exactly do puppy stats settle?
The time the stats settle depends on the time the puppies were born but is on the 10/11th day after birth. The exact time is based on hours, not days.
We DO NOT recommend rushing to FH pups when they are 10 days old.
Isn't bitch a bad word?
No, bitch is the proper term for a female dog.

If you have been banned from ShowDog.Com you will be sent to a page that explains to you why you were banned from our site. If you were simply sent to the "Invalid Login" page, it just means you entered the wrong password.
Do my dog pictures have to only have my dog in the picture?
No, you can use pictures for your dog as long as the primary focus of the picture is of a dog of the breed the picture is supposed to represent.
However, if your dog goes BIS, you will need to change the picture to a picture of a stacked show dog, or it will be replaced by the site administrators.
What are forever homes?
Forever homes are simply loving families who would adopt or buy your dogs if this were real life.
Why can't I show my dog/bitch?
There are several reasons you might not be able to enter a dog or bitch...
Dogs must be at least 15 days old to show
Dogs must be under 121 days old to show
You cannot enter your dogs in the SDWC yourself, they must earn an entry
You can only enter one all-breed show per day
You can only enter one specialty per day
There is a dog entered in more than one show on a certain day. What is wrong and what can be done to fix this?
Dogs are allowed to enter one all breed show and one specialty show per day.
If a dog is entered in more than on all breed show in a day, the excess entries are removed before the show. This is taken care of automatically, there is no need to report it.
How many session do we get?
Basic users get five sessions per day. Premium users have access to various options regarding salary vs sessions.

When I train my dogs the "Increased Since Yesterday" thing comes up but nothing happens. It has been on 18 for a long time, something is wrong.
No, nothing is wrong, that's the way it is supposed to work. The actual ratings for your dogs go to a much higher degree of accuracy that what you see. For example, you may see a rating of 16 for a certain trait but the actual rating would be something like 16.383292. If you see "Increased Since Yesterday" it means that rating has actually increased. It wouldn't show up if that weren't the case.
Also, as dogs get trained to higher and higher levels, their ratings get harder and harder to improve. While you may be able to go from a 5 to a 6 in just one day it may take as much as a week to get from an 18 to a 19.
Dogs will also decrease in their ratings each day. While you may see a change from 15 to 14 as a one point change it is likely a change from a rating of something like 15.002 to 14.983. This is not a bug, the system is designed to require you to work with your dogs every day to get their ratings up.
How do I sponsor a dog show?
To sponsor a show, click on “Dog Show Results” and then click on “Add Show to Schedule”.
This is not recommended for everyone. Very few show sponsors get their money back in entry fees.

We do not encourage users to sign up for additional basic accounts. Users found to be using more than one basic account run the risk of having all of their basic accounts banned.
Why don't some handlers show up for my dog?
Either the handler has already been taken or will not agree to handle the dog. The top rated handlers have pretty high training requirements before they will agree to show a dog. If your dog is not properly trained, some of the top handlers will not show up as options.
Why didn't a show run?
Shows require at least ten entries to run. If there are not enough entries the show will be cancelled.

No, it means that's the current price. The price drops throughout the day before settling on the final price.

There are only three things that could be going on in this case;
You aren't logged in when viewing the dog.
The owner has offers turned off.

We have received dozens of e-mail regarding this subject and in each and every situation, that was the case.

The breed rankings are based only on dogs defeated in the past month. Sometimes users will show up for a full month after they no longer own any dogs in a breed.

How do I add a picture to my kennel page?
To post a picture on your main kennel page, you must have a premium account. There will be an Edit Kennel Slogan link on your main kennel page. When you click on that, you will see a box for you to enter text and code for pictures. To enter a picture, find the URL (web address) for the picture. The URL for a direct link to an image should begin in http:// and end in one of the image tags, such as .bmp, .jpg, .jpeg, or .tif. Use the [IMG ] tags to enter it into the box. It will look like this, only without any spaces: [IMG ]complete URL[/IMG ] . Be sure and only use pictures that are not copyrighted, or that you own. Putting up a copyrighted picture (or text) could result in your kennel slogan being deleted without notice.
If you have a picture on your computer and need to upload it to the web but do not have your own website, you can use any of several photo hosting sites such as Photobucket.com to create an account and upload your pictures. See the specific sites for detailed instructions on how to sign up for that site and get started uploading your pictures.
Remember, we still have many users that are on dial-up or otherwise limited internet access. More people may view your slogan if you don't add too many pictures, or pictures that are very large.

You cannot add payouts to shows less than two-days before the show.

Why can't I get into the chat room?
While the chat room is not a premium feature, basic users are not allowed in our chat room.
If you are a premium user and cannot login to chat, make sure you are entering your username in a case sensitive manner. Every time we've received a report from a premium user that they could not get into the chat room, it was due to the username and password not being entered in the correct cAsE sEnSiTiVe format.
