I have added the lifespans for each breed to the breed information pages. These lifespans are the earliest age a dog can die of old age.

The numbers came from various sources and we tended to go toward the upper end of lifespans for various breeds. This along with the fact that dogs don't die of old age until the lifespan has been reached on here creates a system where dogs will life much longer than their real life counter parts.

If you see a breed that is too long or to short, please post a reference in this thread and we'll consider changing it.

Shot Lifespan Breeds

I need some input on what to do with the following two dozen or so breeds. They are primarily large breeds with short lifespans in real life. However, I announced that dogs wouldn't die until 12-months old so right now they are set at a lifespan of 12-months.

Should we keep the 12-month minimum or set them with more realistic lifespans?

Breed Lifespan

Appenzeller Sennenhund 9
Argentine Dogo 11
Bernese Mountain Dog 9
Black Russian Terrier 11
Bloodhound 10
Boxer 10
Bullmastiff 10
Cane Corso 10
Caucasian Mountain Dog 11
Chinese Shar-Pei 10
Dogue de Bordeaux 9
French Bulldog 11
Great Dane 10
Irish Wolfhound 7
Leonberger 10
Mastiff 11
Neapolitan Mastiff 10
Newfoundland 10
Pyrenean Shepherd 11
Rottweiler 11
Saint Bernard 10
Scottish Deerhound 9
Thai Ridgeback 11

I really like the breed lifespans, it's more realistic. Jen

By adding the life-span factor already into the game, it's making it more realistic, and taking the step to go ahead and put in the different breed life-spans will just help SD become more realistic.

I am for breed life-spans rather than 12-months.

I think the life span should be the same as the breed life span would be. I realize that some dogs will have a much shorter life spam but, they also have a shorter life span in real life.

Hey Jeff,

Im involved with Chinese Shar-pei outside of showdog.com

10 is a reasonable life expectancy. I would have recommended 8-9 a few years ago, but with current breeding improvements and other advances in the breed, your estimated age is accurate.

I am for the lifespan being the same as RL. The other breeds are, so why shouldn't these big fellas? laugh :D In most cases its only a few RL months anyway. Its not that its a HUGE difference..... I have giant breeds in RL and while its sad I know they will die several years before their medium sized sister. That's just life... I think it would make the game more realistic. happy :)

Sounds good to me. But I can't speak for any of these breeds, because I am not involved with any of them.

I keep BMDs in RL and the simple fact is they do tend to have a shorter life span than many breeds. This is a fact you accept if you keep them and I don't see that Show Dog should be any different. I would say that 9 is a very fair average for them happy :)

Edited to add: I have several of the other breeds on the list in some of my other SD kennels and agree with their averages as well happy :)

Jeff, in your effort to keep the game as realistic to RL show dogs as possible, I feel it would be a good idea to drop them down to mimic their counter parts. happy :) 300 days is 10 years and that's not a HUGE difference from the full year. Serious players have either forever homed or moved their favorites to the RC long before that age anyway.

I agree with tribernbmd. I have a BMD in real life, and they do tend to have shorter life spans than most other breeds. I would not mind the different life spans for different breeds in Showdog. Yes, 9 is very fair for their average! wink ;)

I think the life span is more realistic because Great Danes don't live as long as Chihuahuas.

Also, I think food prices should be adjusted for larger breeds vs small breeds. I can feed a whole army of Miniature Pinschers or 1 Doberman.

Yes, I think lifespan should mirror dogs' real lifespan.

I'll start death tonight with the minimum 12 age and change it to the proper age for those breeds on Monday to give their users a bit of warning.

I'm really tempted to say 12 minimum for all so a few breeds don't get shortchanged.

But...we do want to be realistic here. Like some breeds like AmStaffs and Sibs take forever to get sessioned up enough to get to their potential for being top group/BIS winning dogs so have a disadvantage against other breeds there. If they take longer to get BISs they have less show career days to get to All Time Top winning dog (all breeds). Some breeds just have more/less advantages than others, and it's part of the game to learn and use those advantages/disadvantages.

So I think I'll vote for RL breed lifespan for the new minimum.

For the lifespan, do you mean that when dogs reach that age they cant show and etc any more. Or do you mean that they are deleted from the game? Also what are the ages on SD?

I've been involved with Saints IRL and have many of the short life span dogs here on SD.

With one question, I have no problem with the less than 12 mo life span- Are all dogs just going to automatically 'die' exactly when they hit thier age expectancy? Or are there other factors, luck of the draw if you will, that may make one dog 'live' longer than another in any given breed or litter?

We all know those exceptional short life span dogs that live to be 15+!

I think that the short life span is a more than fair trade for the large litters that allow the large breeds to improve their traits faster.

No, that's the age that they could potentially die.

Well, it sounds like the decision has already been made, and frankly it doesn't much matter to me personally.

That being said however if you already announced that it would be 12 months for all breeds it only seems fair to stick to what was originally stated. Granted you did ask here for feedback, but I doubt the vast majority of players frequent the forums, even though there are links to all admin topics now.

I don't know kinda seems like your post about maybe not having dogs die...why change what was already stated. ~shrug~ That's just my two cents worth. Either way I won't be upset. wink ;)
