I was training my Boxer the in-out method of doing weaves and he has it down to a T except now that he thinks he's the weave master he's running full speed at them and missing a few poles here and there. When he goes fast like that I can't keep up with the in-out in-out. I don't want to encourage him to slow down because when we do start competing I still want the enthusiasm. Question is... Should I slow him down until I think he's the weave master then work on speed or should I maybe switch to a different method of training like channel weaves that way I keep the speed and it's basically fool proofing his weaves? Give him guides that help him be patterned. Don't loose that speed!
You don't need wires (I hate those). You can take just about anything and put them semiblocking on the side the dog shouldn't go on (like to the left of the 1st pole, right of the 2nd pole). For my Pembrokes I use things like paint cans, pillows, milk jugs, anything goes! Put them close to the pole at 1st then slowly move them out from the pole to the sides.
The dog might initially jump them but quickly learns not to and is guided nicely thru the correct pattern. This has been a GREAT transition method for going from weaveomatics (my method) or channels to full upright/together. Every dog I've transitioned from weave O's with this method has had stupendous weaves, very very fast, they learn them quickly and accurately.
I found wires just made the dog think it was a different obstacle and confused them. |

I would not switch to channels either, rather if possible switch to weave o matic because it is the best for training footwork so he is not skipping poles. Or use the guides like Wildsyde suggested as long as that doesn't make him become cautious again.

So I bought some little orange cones that they use in football and blocked the spaces I didn't want him to go and I wish I had a camera. First time I sent him through I think he was a little confused, he weaved through four poles perfectly and then he decided that the last cone was a jump but changed his mind at the last second and decided to finish weaving but he had fallen over himself by that point. It was so funny. The cones are definately helping, sometimes he is still too fast for himself and just abandons the whole thing. Hopefully he'll find his perfect speed to be able to go through perfectly and still keep his lightning speed. Thanks for the advice. Gambit |
