I was just wondering what your opinions were on repeat breedings. For me, after I get a good dog from one breeding, the puppies from the repeat usually aren't as good. Do repeat breedings ever work for anyone else? Thanks in advance. (:

P.S. Sorry if this is a blonde question, I don't have much experience with breedings...

Each breeding is unique - it's not influenced by previous breedings. Your chances of getting something good are just as good the second time as the first.

If the first breeding was disappointing, the second probably will be too although it might be a little better, or worse. If the first was really nice, the second would likely also be nice - maybe better, maybe not as good.

If the first litter contained one outstanding individual and the rest only mediocre, it might have been just a fluke. If most were very nice with one outstanding, you have a better chance of getting another very good pup.

I personally don't often repeat but pick the best in each litter and breed from there. I will try the parents again in different combinations, but not usually the same pairs.

I have done several repeat breedings mainly with golden retrievers. I usually can get several nice puppies each time. Of course you have to have a very nice sire and dam that compliment each other nicely.

I think it really depends on the breeding. I don't do repeats often, mostly because if there is something outstanding from the litter that improves on either sire or dam then I focus going from there on. Though one litter I desperately wanted to repeat I wasn't able to, the sire became deceased shortly after so I waited a generation and then a did a line breeding on the sire to get what I wanted. It worked out well.

I never use to do repeat breedings until just recently. I found it a more accessible option to get a dam her Bronze Merit.

In my kennel Blue Haze I have a bitch which was bred by me and got some nice finishable pups from her first litter (well two our of four were really nice) so I decided to breed her again and got some more even nicer pups. In fact I bred three out of four nice pups from that litter and one of them was among the highest in the breed and obviously the best I'd ever bred!

What a good idea Silver Wind, I never thought of the Bronze option before.

Generally I never repeat and only breed the bitch 3 times....(rare breed habit, lol).

Thanks. wink ;)

It just depends on how good the first litter was from a bitch, you know?
