Well I got my new show pup on Sunday and I have to say I am hooked on the breed already. She is soooo smart (learns ten times as fast as any other dog I have ever owned) and is so willing to please its amazing. Shes very birdy also and we will be doing not only conformation showing but hunt tests and possiably field trails next year. Her first fun show will be end of this month at a UKC show she will be in novice puppy since she is only four months old. Her first show for any points will be in January at the GSP Club of ORegons specialty show. She turns 6 months old two days prior to that show. I just cant thank her breeders enough for allowing me to get this beautiful sweet kind girl.
So here is Abby

Here is a video of us show training this is only her third ten minute session she is so smart and free stacks so nice already.

Ohh my gosh she pointed her first wild pheasant today I am so proud of her she found it and pointed it and then followed it when the pheasant ran (due to the wind they didnt want to fly) so I was soooo proud of her we are going grouse hunting this weekend.

She's very sweet... congratulations.
Good luck with her
Edited because I have just watched the video and I had a question ..... Are GSP's typically freestacked in AKC/UKC? I ask because they are not in the UK, although it is a handy thing to teach the dog to be able to do..... and a good freestack is very helpful after their individual show particularly on a straight up and down.
Did you want criteques on your video? I had a couple of suggestions (though everyone has their own way of doing things) but didn't want to jump right in with them |

Sure you can criteque if you want I know we free stack on the down and back and have seen handlers free stack them when they are waiting in a big group of dogs. She free stacks much better right now then hand stacking so I am working on both with her. Normally in the UKC shows I have been to it is almost all free stacking and in AKC they are normally hand stacked for the judge to go over then free stacked after the down and back and then hand stacked or free stacked waiting for the rest to be judged.

Well.......... here are my suggestions for what they are worth
The main thing I picked up on is she is posting terribly on the free-stack. Most pups when they first start out do so I wouldn't be too concerned. I wondered if you step back from her a little it would help as there were a couple of times when she got it spot on 3:35 for example and you were further off from her. Could be that she is overcompensating for the back legs but equally when you are really close she is looking up at you which would cause her to rock back too.
When handstacking if you lift the front legs off the ground (from between the fore-limbs..... hand under breast plate) very slightly then place her down gently her front legs should be in the right place..... saves fidling (leaving you more time to get the back legs right before puppy wriggles kick in) and should work well for your girl as she is nicely put together. I use a small piece of non-slip rubber weave matting to train where the back legs go as it does take a while for the pup to get the right idea and compensate for the weight shift when they are stacked.......... particularly on a smooth surface.
They are fairly contrary compared to some breeds so if she is moving her foot back every time you are moving it I would do some classical conditioning specifically in this area, you can then shape the position from this. I start off first rewarding the dog every time I touch the leg till they equate the handling to the reward, then whilst my hand is there, then when I move it, then when I move it and the dog maintains it for a couple of seconds and build up from there. If you do it like this and fairly gradually the front end tends to look after itself. Only thing I find difficult to mould is head carriage but your girl has a lovely feminine head and carries herself extremely well.
Is hard to evaluate movement at this age because they are all over the place which is completely normal for a GSP pup...... at least every one I have had
Your lines are really nice and straight which is great cause the temptation with a pup all over the place is to compensate, which nine times out of ten exagerates the problem rather than fixes it. I focus on something ahead and keep my direction and speed completely consistent and it is surprising how quickly they cotton on compared to other breeds I have worked with.
Because of the clean lines and very forward movement I find it worth the while really working on the transition from walk and down again, and also the turns but it is being pedantic.
Everyone has their own way of doing things and that would just be the way I tackle the hiccups but whichever way you decide to do it she has great potential. I'm not brilliant at 2D but I like her....... looks like you are doing a great job already......... can't wait to see how she gets on in the American ring.

Wayward thank you for the advice I will definatly try that and thanks for the compliments on my girl. I am excited to see how she does and will try and get back from her farther. I did see she was posting but at this point was just wanting her to hold still for two seconds lol will try your advice and will let you know how it works.

She's a cutie! I will be at the show in janurary working for a handler who has a few GSPs so I might get to see her in person
She is really good at free stacking already! I think if thats what makes her look best and you can get her to pull forward I would do that in the ring for presenting. (except during examination I would hand stack) |

Yeah we are working on both she did great too and wasnt posting on the free and hand stacks she is learning to put her weight forward this was only after 3 ten minute sessions so thinking that she will do much better by January. I look forward to getting to meet you hopefully at the specialty I am really looking forward to it. This will be my first specialty as I have never had a dog good enough to take to one till now.
