Hi, we got ourselves a Labrador, we have a fairly large territory near the house and would not like it to get lost. Keeping him at home all the time or on a leash is not an option. What advice would you give?

The easiest way is electric dog fence layout https://www.containmydog.com/videos/electric-dog-fence-layouts/ . An ugly fence will not fence off you. Just a perimeter will be set for the dog, beyond which it will not go out. A light current will be applied to her collar. It will not harm the dog, but it will eventually train her, and she will know the boundaries of your home.

But also be wary of electric fences if you plan to leave the dog outside alone for long periods of time. Sure, your dog can't leave. But it doesn't prevent stray dogs or other animals from approaching or potentially harming your dog. That is a huge safety concern.

How come you aren't able to keep him inside?

Beware - these things are NOT 100 percent effective no matter what some folks think.

If there is no physical barrier, a full-out running dog will blow right through before it even registers the shock!

Then, when he tries to return home, he's gonna get shocked again . . .

If you can't properly fence the entire area, consider putting up a reasonably sized fenced run when supervision is not possible.

And yes, I agree, even better inside when you are not there.

Oddly enough, the original question and the first response are both brand new Basic accounts with no game dogs - Hmmm . . .

With so much dog theft, everywhere, I advise your dog to be crate trained and crate him when you not home.

Did you know?
The figure 8 exercise requires the team to heel in a figure 8 pattern either on or off leash. Generally two of the ring stewards will assist the judge with this exercise by acting as "posts", standing 8 feet apart, that the team walks around to form the loops of the figure 8.
