I've recently started back but I'm not sure what kennel runs do?

They just organize your dogs into groups. Each run is a different group.
If you don't want to use them, just use the classic view.

I have several runs and they are really useful. If you click on table view it shows all their stats. I have different runs for dogs and bitches i am showing, and for broods when they are expecting. Also pups I will show in the future.
