hey!ive gota border collie, he isnt a working dog, but he always comes to the yard i go to, which events horses and some of them are worth quite a bit of money!
recently though , he came with me on a hack, and he was circling the horse that i was on.
he also, if he ever gets the chance, goes into the fields, and watches them.
one incident, when my sister and i evented our own horse, he attacked her, trying to bite her neck.
he does similar things with sheep, why ?
he was a rescue dog, i was wondering if this is influenced on his past :S let me know what you think! thanks,

Your expert is wrong. This is normal and welcomed Border Collie behavior.

Perhaps if you could elaborate on the behavior more we could help. It kind of sounds like normal herding behavior to me, not sure that neutering would help that. Generations of border collies were bred to herd, so I'm not sure you would be able to train that away.

Fixing the dog could help a lot. A lot of times my dog does that with my other, and he is just playing. Also, with circling the horse/sheep etc, that is normal herding behavior.

Neuter him, or maybe your not prepared to own him.He needs to be taught right from wrong, to not bite people.Hanging around the horses is normal, and If you didnt know that, you should have researched alot more before you got a BChappy :)

Being that you are in college and dont have much money probably wasnt the wisest decioson of getting a BC. Im not saying you can do it or are dumb or anything, just that the circumstances you are undrer may make it hard to own a border collie. If you find you cant properly take care of him, ASk a friend to take care of him or your parents. You could give monthly amounts of money and still visit, and when you are ready for him then you could take him back. Again.. Nuetering could really help. Not necissarily with the herding instincts, but with some of that aggressiveness. The boy should be taught right and wrong.. and taught when, where, and what he is allowed to herd. Being that you live on a farm is great, and him bighting the throats of sheep is a normal herding behavior. He is not trying to kill them.. only herd them. I recomend talking to the breeder you got him from and getting more info, and if you didnt get him from a breeder take him to training classes. BC's Need !TONS! of exercise, so lots of off leash exercise is needed. Try flyball or agility. My BC can play soccer laugh :D Also teaching him a job or to run with you is great.. especially in college.

If you have any more questions about your dog Feel free to PM me, i have a Border collie myself.

i had a rescue BC. we were completely unprepared for him as the previous owners lied and said he was fully trained. an expert said it would take 6 months of 24hr a day to bring him round. we didn't have that time so we decided to take him back.

Even if the poeple had said he was fully trained.. these dogs still need training after training. They are super active and such. I own a two acre field plus about a four acre back yard, and a two acre area of woods. They need LOTS of off leash ecercise.. and tou should have been prepared for that even if they did say it was fully trained. Dogs take a while to settle into a new place... we have had my new BC for a month now and he is just now settling down

If he bites you and wont let go, gently pinch his ear and pinch it harder if he continues. If the end he will let go to yelp. Thta is also good use to pups.

Also that is NOT normal border collie behavior, i have 3. it especially doesnt help if he is highly strung and if so do not encourage him to be wound up. When you take him on walks just be a bit boring and do not throw a ball or anything. Also if he bites you, immediately scream/yelp like dogs do. He SHOULD take that with a grain of salt. If not, that is definately not normal behavior!

It will make him less dominant as he hormone levels will go down. If anything he might be quiet!

I wouldnt pinch his ear. I tried that years back with my dogs and they bit my hand instead of yelping. they were bighting the other hand.

What i do for that is that i Say NO VERY firmly and give them a smack on the snout. *near the nose* Not hard enough to hurt him, or even to really sting.. just to surprise him and i know for me it works every time. If he continues bad things like biting strangers, you should enroll him in a training class and get him a muzzle. You shoud also get a can (like one from the grocery store, use it, and then put pennies inside of it. Then seal up the can and if he does somthing u dont like, throw the can near him, hard, but not at him. before yout throw the can say no firmly.

BC's are supposed to use eye, not teeth. Not normal behavior. I'd keep him restrained when around horses before him or a horse is seriously hurt.

The Kennel Club (UK) system, which is also used by the Australian National Kennel Council[1] and in other countries, is considered the most difficult to earn a title under.
