Ok since other dog breeds are getting color I think we should too.

I have a list of Akita Colors we should add, if you have any more please post. I also need someone to do the genetic make up/percentages- I hopeless at the kind of stuff.

Color:
-Red & White (Black Masked Red, Self Masked Red, White Faced Red)
-Fawn (includes Silver Fawn, Golden Fawn, & Fawn with black overlay)
-Fawn Pinto
-Black & White
-Brindle (Fawn Brindle, Black Brindle, & Red Brindle)
-White
-Silver, black overlay
-Brown with white markings
-Hood, Split Mask, Etching/Edging

I got some color info on www.akitacentral.net/colors/

So I guess no one wants color or even wants to try to get color... wink ;)

What do you guys thing is the most common Akita color?
I think its Fawn or Fawn Pinto. But I have no real life experience with the breed.
And if any one knows the genetic coding I would really appreciate the help! happy :)

I too would love to see colors implemented in Akitas. the only problem is it is Greek to me! If anyone is willing to try to work the percentages and coding out, more power to them! i wish I had a clue....Tracey

It's very hard because there are so many different colored Akitas....plus what ever is in that bloodline.....so a pure white breed to a pure white akita could make any of the colors from the AKC guidelines!!! Good Luck!!!

I've watched what they've been doing in the Alaskan Malamutes and I think it'd probably be easier on all of us to go that route with all the colors we have. Kimoko in Mals worked hard on making the list of colors smaller in order to make it easier on Jeff. I'm not sure how to do all the precentages and such but probably limiting it to the basic colors and patterns would be easiest for Jeff to implement. Its hard though, and I don't know the breed in RL only on SD.

I also have no experience of the breed in RL, and all the genetic stuff is greek to me! Maybe we should only add Brindle, Fawn, Pinto, Red, and White.

Can anyone make sense of that?
I am not a biolagy person so this makes little sense to me.
But maybe someone that knows a little can simplify it enough to get colors added?

I think we should pick the coat colors that we HAVE to have, the most common and perhaps one of the least common ones. Colors that can be bred that would produce those colors. For instance (going by what I know with Pei in RL) most fawns can throw any color. Silver is the rarest in my real breed, and I haven't seen many akitas with it, so that would in my mind be harder to get. Brindles are fairly common from what I've seen. And I don't think Jeff is doing markings just yet.

I messed around and wanted to show you all what I did. It could be wrong...actually I'm sure some of it is. I took basic color models from several color genetics pages. I can post them if you all are interested. And this is what I came up with:

A Locus
ay - Red Tinted Colors
at - color with overlay of black
A - Black/White

B Locus
bb - Brown
br - No Brindle
BR/Br - Brindle
bbR - brown with brindling

C Locus
C- Full color
ch - dilutes/overlays

D Locus
dd - Silver

E Locus
Ee/EE - Black Mask
ee - No Mask

I agree that simplyfing the color model would be best for programming and breeding in general.
I don't know enough about genetics to figure it out but from what I can tell the model HOW created seems right.

Well in Chows we agreed to an even split of color. Seems to work out ok. I wouldnt mind throwing in the rare colors though at a lower percentage so that if you really had a rare dog, it may be in high demand for breeding. Just my thought. Tracey

Did you know?
In the American Kennel Club, a dog needs 15 points to become a Champion, with each win gaining anywhere from zero to five points depending on the number of dogs competing and the area where the show is held.
