I saw someone post pics earlier of their corgi in a natural instinct herding somthing or other. Does anyone know what these are called? Does it cost money to enter? Are their a lot of people? Does your dog have to have any previous herding experience? I want to enter Frankie in one of them....but havent seen anything in the papers or anything. Where are these mainly held at?

What about that thing but in the form for a JRT? Like where they go underground in a series of tunnels to find like a rat in a cage or somthing?

It's 'instinct', not insect. Instinct herding is what a herding dog does naturally.

The OP is referring to an agility competition where the dogs are judged on their herding ability, or their ability to navigate through underground tunnels to find prey.

This costed me about $30, and there was a pen full of about 3 sheep, and you go in with your dog..and see what it does. They have a criteria sheet based on if it circled, if it was quiet etc.You get about 3 minutes. Then you go out, and its the next persons turn

I have never done herding with Bandit before, and he got 100% on this test.No one could believe it, but he did hehe
We have to let him do it every year at this show we go too, if you dont, he walks up to the pen and starts biting the cage LOL

These can be held at usually alot of herding trialshappy :)

OW, a good lot of misinformation above!!

Agility is a phsyical sport where dogs go over jumps, thru tunnels, teeter totters, etc. It has nothing to do with herding.

Earthdog sports are where earthdog breeds (terriers, dachies) go thru underground tunnels after rats (safely caged at the end of the tunnel).

A herding instinct test is when a dog is tested for having basic herding instinct in him, training and prior exposure to sheep or ducks is not necessary. If your dog is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, go to the PWCCA.org website and find the location of the corgi club nearest you and contact them for when they might have such a test (for PWC's only). In addition, some of the herding test venues have herding instinct tests. There are dogs that have passed the herding instinct test that are not herding breeds (golden, boxer, pom).

Did you know?
In the American Kennel Club, a dog needs 15 points to become a Champion, with each win gaining anywhere from zero to five points depending on the number of dogs competing and the area where the show is held.
