Last night Joplin, Missouri got hit by a horrible tornado..and now the once lovely city is in ruins. At this time the death toll is at 116 and it is expected to rise. I personally live near Joplin and have a family member there...and I have not heard from them. Please keep these people in your prayers as most of them have no homes sad :( Even the High School is in pieces..and St. Johns looks like a bomb went off. For more information you can go here:

The death count is up to 123, with 1500 people still unaccounted for (though many of those were most likely able to flee but have been unable to contact back home).

The High School, two Elementary Schools and one of the Technology Centers were all completely damaged beyond repair.
An additional Elementary school, the head office and a middle school were all heavily damaged.
All classes have been canceled, obviously, for the remainder of the schoolyear.

A KC police officer working in Joplin was struck by lightning and is in critical condition. No further updates on him as of 6pm 5/24.

The tornado was raised to an EF5 rating a little before 4pm 5/24, was a confirmed single storm with multi-vortex, and is classed as the most damaging single tornado in more than 60 years.

President Obama will be in Joplin on Sunday to survey the damages.
FEMA is on site now.

Police are not allowing sightseers into numerous places in and around Joplin. Residents, rescue crews and EmR are all required to have permits before they are allowed into residential areas and onto the property of commercial buildings. Curfew has been set. Looters are not being taken lightly and will be arrested on sight.

Donations are being accepted in the forms of cash only at the time. They are currently not accepting food, water or clothing as of 5pm 5/24.

Cadaver dogs have been scouting through many of the concrete slabs from Home Depot, Wal Mart, Big Lots, etc all of today. While there is still hope that many people will be found alive, due to the size of the rubble and the rains that have fallen since the tornado it is doubtful.

Several residents and one staff member of two Joplin nursing homes were killed.
Several patients of the Medical Center were killed, some are still unaccounted for.

This is one of the worst storms the country has seen in many many years. And the worst we have seen in Missouri.
What you see on TV is not even half of the damages. Add to those scenes the sound of the sirens being tested (as storm systems are still heading towards the Joplin area as of 6pm 5/24), the smell of gas and numerous fires. Not to mention the storm has blown debris from Joplin more than 50 miles away.

A contact in Edmond OK says a tornado is confirmed just north of her and is heading ENE directly towards Joplin.
Three additional tornados are still south of Edmond OK and may or may not reach Edmond and eventually Joplin.

If you pray, please do so now.
If you do not, light a candle for the survivors and those waiting to be rescued... or laid to rest.

Volunteers are needed to help with search & rescue and clean-up. Anyone in/around the Joplin area, or those willing to travel are urged to offer any physical assistance they can. Call 1-800-427-4626 for up to date, detailed information on who is needed.

If you can donate the use of your heavy-weight crane or fork lift, front-end loader, flatbed trailers, scrap trailers, dumpsters or other heavy industrial type machinery or holding bins, please be sure to mention this when you call. They may still be in need of additional heavy machinery to lift and move much of the debris.

Very sad news on our corgi lists. A Cardigan person first posted that they were looking for her dad. Then that he was lost from the tornado. Today we hear she passed away too. She hadn't been in the tornado, but perhaps grief related.

Updated: found this AP article, tho it doesn't mention names, am sure it's them.

Did you know?
A specialty show is a dog show which reviews a single breed, unlike other dog shows, particularly conformation shows, which are generally referred to as "all-breed" because they are open to all breeds recognized by the sponsoring kennel club.
