Color genetics in Afghan Hounds. I give up. I am trying to get a self-masked red, a black and tan, and a black-masked red.

Litter #1:
Black and tan bitch x self-masked red dog
Puppies: Black and brindle x 6

Litter #2:
Black-masked red bitch x self-masked red dog
Puppies: Red domino x 8, cream domino x 1

I am about to scream. I have a different black and tan and self-masked red I am going to try. And I have a lot of puppies for sale. Offer me $1.

Nooooooooooooo

Once again!

Black and tan bred to red, different dogs, and got an entire litter of RED DOMINOS!

I a trying to get reds and black and tans!!! I don't have a red bitch to breed to my red male. I do have a black & brindle bitch I could breed to my black and tan though. So frustrating.

Playing with the colors in Afghans was pretty weird for me too. Really felt like rolling the dice. I got a black and tan from a Red Domino and a Blue Brindle. Felt like throwing Spagetti at the wall trying to work through all the colors. Lemme see if I can help ya. I'm gonna look at the genetics and try and see some good options for you.

Well I looked and honestly if I was trying to get Red and Black and Tan I would be using any Reds, any Black, and Cream Domino and Cream with Black Mask to get it. Those cream colors have a dom D which you'll need. Best of luck, afghans are fun huh haha. I have some dogs you can have and or use if you like. I just finished my color project in afghans.

Well, I bred a b/m red to a b/m red so we will see if I get a b/m red. I will wait till my black/tan girls are ready to breed again and try to breed them to my black/brindle. Don't have a black/tan male. What are the odds? LOL. I never had this much trouble before.

Meanwhile, the self-masked red. I have 2 males, but no self-masked cream or red girls. I do have a white one though and I bred her to one of my self-masked reds. We shall see.

FINALLY I got a black and tan puppy - just one! A girl and she has an SOP of 100. Whew, after 4 or 5 litters and close to 40 puppies, I got ONE! This is after breeding my two black and tan brood bitches to black and brindles and blue and creams and getting everything but what I wanted. This time I went to an outside stud and it worked! Black and tan bitch to blue and cream male with generations of the black/tan genetics in pedigree.

pups:
black & tan
black & brindle
blue & cream
blue brindle domino
black & silver
black & silver

Did you know?
Judges are generally certified to judge one or several breeds, usually in the same group, but a few "all-breed" judges have the training and experience to judge large numbers of breeds.
