They do have different herding instincts though. Rough Collies have a gathering instinct, and smooth Collies have a droving instinct.

they need to change that. i think there is a big difference in the way the rough and smooth are judged. What do you think?
the are judged differntly because of the fur and the shineiness of the fur so yes they should be seperate.

Shineiness from the fur? I don't think so. Judges don't judge how shiny the fur is on dogs.

NO.

Smooth Collies & Rough Collies are the SAME breed. Just different varieties. And they are NOT judged differently.

If you want to specialize in just one, then just breed one.

In the US and Canada they are the same. But I'm pretty sure in the rest of the world they are separate, which is dumb.

sarahj said - They are in America. In the AKC they seperate the breeds. They have two totally different personalities.

They are the SAME breed in America. AKC does not split them up.

Their personalities are a little different, yes. But if you would take the time to do some research, you'd find out that the smooth was used for a different purpose than the rough, and needed to be tougher.

Yes, but in Dog Shows in the AKC, they split them into TWO different breeds. They judge them differently. There's the Smooth Collie, and the Rough Collie in AKC Dog Shows.

Not two different breeds, two different varieties. They do other breeds the same way.

Sarahj please educate yourself....they are NOT separate breeds..they are separate varieties.. At all breed shows they are judged separate BUT at specialty shows each VARIETY winner will compete for ONE best of breed(ie the rough variety winner against the smooth variety winner)...what Im trying to tell you is that they are judged AGAINST each other by the SAME standard. The only REAL difference is the coat length.

They DO NOT split them up into two different breeds. They are ONE and the SAME breed. They are just two different VARIETIES. Read up.

They judge them differently.
The ONLY difference is the COAT. That is it. They judge them the SAME.

SAME BREED.

I breed & show collies in RL. If you don't believe what I or the others are trying to tell you, then look it up yourself.

The Kennel Club (UK) system, which is also used by the Australian National Kennel Council[1] and in other countries, is considered the most difficult to earn a title under.
