Breath of Spring Kennel
History of the Anatolian Shepherd
Known as Coban Kopegi (literal translation: sheep dog) or Karabas (literal translation: Black Head, for the black mask typical of the breed) in Turkey, this is an ancient breed native to Asia Minor (Anatolia). On the high Anatolian Plateau, where summers are hot and very dry and winters are cold, the Anatolian Shepherd Dogs live outside year round where they protect flocks from natural predators such as wolves, bears and jackals, and serve as companion to shepherds. Closely related to the Kangal dog from the Sivas province of Turkey, they differ from their cousin mainly in size and temperament.
I am of Turkish descent, and these native dogs have a special place in my heart. I also name my dogs in Turkish. For those interested, the meanings of the names are:
Bahcede Hanimeli = Honeysuckle in the Garden (Title of a folk song)
Sari Cizmeli Mehmet = Mehmet with the Yellow Boots (Title of a famous pop song)
Divane Asik Gibi = Like a Crazy In-Love Wanderer (Title of a traditional folk song)
Bununla Ne Yapsak = What to do with this (I was planning to FH this starter until I checked her SOP and decided to use her to start my own lines)
Gulpembe = Pink (blushing) rose (Title of a pop ballad, dedicated to the songwriter's grandmother named Gulpembe)
Kum Firtinasi = Sand (or Dust) Storm
Uzun Ince Bir Yoldayim = I'm on a Long Narrow Road (title of another traditional folk song)
Ayaginda Gumus Halhal = With a silver anklet on (Title of another famous pop song)
Kabadayi = Bully, Hoodlum, Hooligan, Swashbuckler
Maskeli Balo = Masquearade Ball
Akdeniz Aksamlari = Meditterranean Nights
Biraz Umut = A Little Hope
Kuzularin Sessizligi = Silence of the Lambs
Eylul Aksamlari = September Nights
Gecen Gunler = The Passing Days
