I just recently had an e-mail from a user who gave a basic user a kennel on her family account. Since then, she has cancelled her family subscription but the other user has created a family account from the kennel that she was "given." The original user asked me if she could recover the kennel that she originally gave away since it used her e-mail address and she can request the password for it, and if she couldn't recover it, if she could force the new owner to give her a free kennel on the new owner's family account.

I hope this situation illustrates how giving away free kennels can cause huge problems for both the giver and the receiver.

Call me greedy, but I couldn't bring myself to give someone free access to something I'm paying for. I have a hard time sharing my family acct. with my HUSBAND, much less anyone else.

Thanks Laura.

I would never give anyone part of something I was paying for, except for maybe my sister... If I had a family account that is.

Some people, like some of my good friends, will allow access to a kennel for people that want to "dabble" in SD but mostly talk on chat.

That is one scenerio I can think of.

Does this mean you will allow people to "confirm" the addition of their kennel to a family account?

Thanks for highlighting that Jeff, thats is one reason I wouldn't 'give' away an account I was paying for.

I would not want to take finacial responsibility for someone else's account. If I wanted to give an account to a friend (and it would have to be someone I knew well) I would transfer them the money by paypal so they could pay for it themselves. I'd rather have the option of giving a gift certificate for showdog, but we don't have that here. It would be nice if we did.

I have two people on my family account. I have just added there account rather than giving them a kennel, this way they don't know any passwords etc.

Yeah, I was upgraded from my basic kennel. I still have the same kennel that has my sn hooked to it and all. So, that's not a problem for me, but who would give out a password like that. I protect my password with my life. I don't have it written anywhere. Only in my mind, but thanx Jeff/Laura for the heads up.

i had a basic then was given an upgrade...

i am greatful for all who supproted and nominated me for that family account.

if you do plan to upgrade others please look at it this way you are giving some one who probably cant afford it the chance to play.

i am extremely greatful to this person for doing so and i will not do anything to make them feel they made any mistake. i am now adding a second breed to my kennel as i enjoy the gentic aspect of the game.

if some one has been this good to you. then you should be greatful they are playing this game.

All the original family member had to do was explain to the upgradee and if she was being awkward then it was an easy task to change the password, thereby regaining control of the kennel before she gave up her subscription.

$5 a month is not that much, anyone getting an allowance (if you're young and don't have a job) can afford that. If you have a job and can't afford it, there's probably better things to spend your time doing. wink ;)

I will speak a bit for the other side of things, the givers. I have two family accounts, and I have given away two kennels. I did not regret it, and I wouldn't have done it if I didn't think I'd be here for a very long time. One of the users I'd known on SD for over a year, one I trust very much. The other was a struggling basic who was giving her all to improving the breed and showed a lot of promise. The fact that five kennels is roughly the same price as four was the sole reason I did it. I like helping people out, and if they are deserving, then why not? To be honest, 10 kennels is a bit too much to handle (at least for me), so it works out for the best. Don't veto lending out a helping hand - you never know who could blossom into a wonderful addition to the SD community. Just be careful, do your research, and chose wisely happy :)

This kennel is one from a good friend's family account, and I have to say that I deeply appreciate the generosity that user had to give me a kennel. It has been so much fun, and given me a taste of handling more than one kennel (let's just say I couldn't handle a family... two kennels is pretty hard for me as is!), and it is great to have a friend like that.

Whenever there is a problem with the account, I email the user (either via SD or via normal email) and say that the subscription ran out or whatever. I try to always make a point of saying that if it's not possible for the account to remain open, I completely understand and can do without the kennel; if I really want it, I can upgrade it with my own money.

It's wonderful when people upgrade hardworking basics, or give a kennel to a dear friend. My other kennel was originally upgraded by a user for whom I drew several pictures of animals and the like. It was a 3-month subscription, and when it expired I got a wonderful email from an entirely different user saying that they would gladly pay for the account if I could no longer afford it. I thanked the user, but ended up paying for the kennel myself.

All I'm trying to say is, these things can be difficult to handle, but always remember that the kennel is a gift, and a welcome one at that. And the generosity of users who are willing to do something like that for someone is just wonderful and is deeply appreciated by all; especially to the one who has been upgraded!

Did you know?
The two largest American dog shows after Westminster are the National Dog Show (which is televised on Thanksgiving Day by NBC, usually after the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade) and the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship.
