We have a 22 lb pom. Is that normal? He is 4 years old. He is not fat, just BIG. The dad was 8 lbs. and the mom was 6 lbs. I have tried to post a picture but not sure if it worked. His name is Chandler, a party pom. Awesome buddy. I just wanted to share him with ya'll.

it really isn't normal.... My female which is 3 weighs between 5 and 8 pounds.

My male which is about 15 weeks old weighs about 2 pounds.. and most of that is in his legs..he's going to be tall..

None the less your boy is stunning.. I love parti poms.. in fact my males dam was a black/white parti.

here's a pic of both Cinnamon and Koda about a month and a half ago.

He doesn't look overweight. He's cute though! I'm no expert on Poms, but aren't they normally supposed to be like 6 lbs?

I have a pom and yes that is quite large. My pom is 8 lbs (male) and he is average size for a teddy bear pom. But no he doesn't look fat! Here is a pic of mine

Perhaps somewhere within his pedigree he has another breed of dog that larger? That could come out and make it a giant dog, imf im correct

Your pom is VERY cute.. standard size - no.. but he looks like he's an awesome pet which is what's important!

I am a RL breeder/exhibitor of Toy breed dogs (Yorkies) and I'll try to give you some insight as to why this happens...an example I'll use is one of my own litters.. Parents were both 5 lbs, puppies ended up hitting 9 and 10 lbs. Why did this happen? Somewhere back in the pedigree there were bigger dogs, and they just happened to come out on this particular breeding. The Dam's grandmother was 9 lbs, so I'm sure she had some contributing factors there. A lot of larger breeders will use larger broods, over standard size.. and often several generations later you'll end up with a very large puppy that seems to come out of nowhere...however if you just trace back, you'll find where it originated. Same is true for especially small puppies. I always hate it when people call to inquire about my puppies and ask how big the parents were. It makes very little difference how big the parents were in my breed.. lol They should ask how big the grandparents and great grandparents were! wink :)

Never the less, the point is that your boy is a darling pet, even at 22 lbs, and since I assume you bought him to be a pet, then that is fantastic!

I'm sorry about your dog, but please don't bump up old posts. This started in June of 2008. wink ;)
