Why do people enter so many dogs in shows? Once you make a 5-point major there isn't anything to gain is there? I mean, why enter 30 dogs in one show? Frankly, even if I wanted to I couldn't afford it and I just don't see the point of it. I guess if the same dog always wins it would help that dog make it to #1 but otherwise, why? I see it happening in several breeds and it makes it a bit daunting for other exhibitors. (Posting for a friend).

That is my bug bear too. What it does is increase the number of dogs needed for a major. Actions have consequences. Carol |

- Gets dogs on the All-Time list - Easier to session all and enter all than to remember who out of 30 were sessioned - Don't care or not thinking about others - Gets kennel up to top kennel in breed, which may increase sales - Gets kennel name familiar among breeders - Intimidation factor - Fun - Squashes small breeders and forces them to become more competitive or quit breed - Have multiple nice dogs and want to see who will win against who That's all I can think of. I think the worst is handler hogging. It's a dream when there's lots of entries and no one books handlers - then the best dogs truly win without handler bias! I have seen high entries in breeds from kennels and none of their dogs ever win too so that's why I say handler hogging in every show with tons of entries hurts other breeders the most in my opinion. |

Last I knew, champions didn't count towards the schedule, only class entries? I can't stand handler hogging or entering over the 5pt major limit. |

I think when you are playing with 100 SOP breeds, they are all sessioned up to showable, and all are entered. I do this in no handler shows so I can see which ones to keep. There are many times I've sold a winner only to have kept the losers. My pet peeve is players in one breed with high SOPs that don't share their bloodlines (I respect that), but then they enter EVERY show with a class dog & bitch and a specials dog & bitch all with handlers, therefor leaving it almost impossible to gain points much less majors or Grands. |

Well here is the new point scale for Afghans which pretty much lets me out of the competition. 3 pts: 8 dogs/6 bitches 4 pts: 11 dogs/7 bitches 5 pts: 13 dogs/9 bitches Can we please just enter the number needed to get a major so the numbers can be reasonable again? |

quoteThis includes those who pull all their entries last minute because someone else entered. It's ridiculous. |

Hi Alderbren, you wouldn't be out of winning because of the point system it would be because your dogs mom is under 20 showshine. Way under infact I just bought it's mom. Tarot almost made it. https://www.showdog.com/dog.aspx?id=19206407 Why I bought her wasn't that she was a show prospect but because I couldn't figure out why her show shine was so low. Especially since her dad was 20 showshine and the mother. Well I figured out all I wanted to know. And Tarot is a line that I stick to. I don't sell or stud my dogs yet I'm pretty much a closed breeder. But my dogs are out of old lines and certain specific dogs I want to saturate my guys with. If you are willing I will sell you a pup from what will be competing in the ring. My home bred took the nationals last night. Along with best veterans. I am one that will show, how I need it to go my main objective in the ring is to find the finnishers in the litter of pups that was selected to be showed from the cross. To breed on. And when I get that one that takes off wow it's just like icing on the cake. I really thing the best competition in the ring is your self. Always selecting to improve. Your line your dream. I'm at the stage where my dogs are bred in other kennels but I take it like this a chicken dinner use the meat throw out the bones. Good luck and welcome to Afghounds. I will extend my help to get you started if you like. This breed helped me by reclaiming abandon dogs they had access to and it's paying off. |
